This one is my third X-Wing from this big mold (First one was the electronic FX version).
Over the years, these toys have gotten better and better.
Some of the key features of this toy:
- Realistic paint application. This version features very accurate paint and weathering applications, which match with those of the actual model of Red 2. Previous versions like Red Leader and Electronic FX featured less paint (the FX was mostly adorned with very nice stickers… but not painted)
- New accessories: This toy comes with two ladders, the pilot and an R2 unit. Note that the ladders are placed wrong in the package and pictures: The big yellow ladder is for maintenance and handling the astromech unit, so it must be placed on the port (left) side of the ship, near the engines (this way, the railing, would prevent the operator to fall to the left of the ladder). The shorter red, straight ladder is the one used by the pilots to gain access to the cockpit.
Granted, these accessories are not as cool as the swamp beast + tons of moss + lots of boxes that the Dagobah Luke X-Wing came with, but they are indeed quite cool and complement the ship.
- New Wedge Antilles! I’ve had the first Wedge from the POTF2 Cinema Scenes, the second Wedge that was an exclusive, and this third Wedge. This one is the best, since it features a different mold from other pilots (mainly because it uses pieces from other pilots and not the whole body from one other pilot).
- New R2 unit. I know that many don’t know where this unit came from, but it’s the one in the model used for the film.
The other advantage about this toy is that it’s a new release and is comparatively cheaper than the other older ones on the market right now.
I missed the Red Leader X-Wing Star Wars Exclusive Saga New Hope Red Leader X-wing Fighter, which came with an inaccurate color scheme, a generic pilot figure with a non-removable molded helmet painted as Red Leader and NO astromech droid.
But now, I could easily get one of these and custom paint it as Red One and use the newer figures released as a Battle Pack Hasbro Star Wars Battle Pack – Scramble on Yavin, and end up with a much more accurate rendition of Red One.
